Purpose

To provide educational and exhibition opportunities for pastelists through classes, workshops, demonstrations and exhibitions, and to educate the public regarding the merits of soft pastel.

Society History and Activities

Founded by ten pastelists in 1999 with the goal of promoting the use and merit of pastel painting, the Sierra Pastel Society, based in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, now averages over 90 members from California and nearby states. In addition to two general membership shows each year, SPS sponsors two different biennial exhibitions held opposite years: a Signature Membership Show, currently scheduled for November 2011, and our open juried international exhibition Pastels on High again in 2012. SPS also sponsors workshops, paint-outs, critiques and other art events, as well as at least three general meetings a year featuring special demonstrations or programs to help inspire and educate our artists. Information regarding these activities is included in our bi-monthly newsletter and on our website.
